10 Backyard Toys You Must Have

[Reading time: 5 mins]

Must-have backyard toys to stock up on.

Like the majority of families, the influx of backyard toys that parents bought during 2020, was a list a mile-long. We definitely stocked up on what we could that year; and now, years later, our kids are still enjoying all of it!

01. Roller Coaster with Push Car

This isn’t the cheapest toy, but it is my #1 highly recommended one! It’s the simplest thing, but keeps my kids entertained for at least an hour. In fact, we ended up getting a 2nd one [as a hand-me-down], because my kids keep fighting over whose turn it is.

If there is just ONE backyard toy to buy, it’s this one.

02. Water Table or Sand Table

A water table or sand table is probably the most common sense backyard toy you can buy. All kids love water play and there are actually some tables where it has both an area for water and another area for sand, if you want to go that route.

They are also so easy to store because of how small and compact they can be and they come with fun toys that will keep your kids entertained for hours on a hot day.

03. Inflatable Bounce House

Ok, we actually do not have once of these. We don’t have room for it [or rather, we don’t want to make room for it], and we don’t want to spend the money for it either.

BUT if you do have the room and want to invest in one, I know many friends who have one and their kids LOVE it. You can get a bouncy house OR you get one that has water features! If you do opt for just the bounce house, during the winter, you can use it indoors in your basement.

04. Giant Wooden Stacking Game

AKA: Jenga

There are a lot of off-brand wooden stacking games you can buy; or maybe you know someone who can just make a set for you, using leftover wood.

No matter what kind you buy, your kids are sure to enjoy playing this together, and I find that kids get such a kick out of gigantic games.

05. Giant Connect 4

Another giant backyard game that is a hit with the kids!

And this particular Giant Connect 4 is actually a 3-in-1 game that includes a ring toss and basketball hoop. There is also a carrying case, making it easy to store away or travel with it.

06. Splash Pad or Inflatable Pool

Going back to the water theme, your kids will love having a small splash pad to play in, in your backyard. These pads are fairly affordable too and there are many different sizes to choose from.

If your kids are older, or you just want a larger pool to play in, these inflatable pools are also a great option.

07. Bump N' Bounce Body Bumpers

Ok, these seem silly, but I’m telling you, your kids will LOVE these. I mean, I think most adults would too!

The amount of laughter and energy that will be let out from these is overwhelming. They are very affordable too!

08. Bubble Machine

Just like the water tables, a bubble machine is a pretty common sense backyard toy. It’s crazy how much kids love bubbles and how long they can be entertained by them.

There are so many different bubble machines on the market, so you really can’t go wrong with any of them. Just make sure it is one that sits by itself on the table or ground, and does all the work for you.

09. Playground Playset

Alright, I know a playset may not be feasible for everyone. But if you are able to spring the money for one and you have the room for it, it’ll definitely be worth the investment.

You can get a big set at places like Home Depot or Menards, but Amazon actually does have a few smaller / mid-range options available as well.

If you have younger kids or toddlers, another alternative would be to get a small plastic adventure climber.

10. Sports Equipment

If your child likes sports, backyard sports toys are the best forms of entertainment for them. Many sports equipment made for kids are easy to store and set up too.

So many options to chose from: from soccer goals to mini golf, to basketball to badminton - take your pick!
